Travel to Sheffield

The university is very easy to reach from the centre of Sheffield by a short tram ride, or a 10 to 20 minute walk. A map of the university campus with the Hicks Building marked is avaiable here, and a more general maps of Sheffield are available here.

Sheffield is very easy to reach: within one-to-two hours of Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, Doncaster/Sheffield and Leeds/Bradford international airports and with direct fast train connections to London and the south.

For those travelling from Europe, the Eurostar international station is now St Pancras in London, from which there are direct trains to Sheffield (which means no underground travel!).

Probably the best airports to fly into are Manchester, Birmingham or East Midlands (each within 1 to 1.5 hours of Sheffield). General travel advice to Sheffield is provided here.

For some reason the university does not provide travel advice for travel to/from Birmingham airport (despite it being one of my favourite airports to travel from). There are regular trains from the airport (Birmingham International) to Birmingham New Street station from which it is easy to get to Sheffield, and even some direct trains from the sirport.

For train information see National Rail from which tickets can be booked as well. It is a good idea to book a few weeks in advance for travel to/from London (as it can be very expensive, especially travel to London). But beware that the cheapest tickets restrict you to travelling on a predetermined train, so make sure you leave plenty of time to get to/from your flight. Also beware that the UK rail network can be awful at times (the most expensive fares in Europe for the worst system - wonderful!), so make sure you leave lots of time for an international flight.
